Japan Weekend Box Office 02/03 – 02/05. Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village Takes Top Spot

 

The weekend movie box office ranking from February 3rd to 5th has been revealed and includes a box office income of 1,159 million yen, 813,000 moviegoers and a new first place. Among other new releases, this weekend cinemas in Japan saw the arrival of “BTS: Yet To Come in Cinemas” and “Baian the Assassin, M.D. ”.

 

 

Animated film “Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village” took the first place spot, with an impressive debut of 1,158,765,410 yen and drew in 813,422 moviegoers.  It is based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotouge, which was first serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 2016 and was completed in 2020. Since then, Demon Slayer has also become a successful anime and the new film, To the Swordsmith Village includes Episode 10 and 11 of the Entertainment District Arc and Episode 1 of the Swordsmith Village Arc.

 

 

 

“The Legend & Butterfly” starring Takuya Kimura and Haruka Ayase went down one spot from last week, but was able to gain a total of 240,000 moviegoers and 320 million yen at the box office. The cumulative performance of the 10-day release has exceeded 920,000 people and the box office revenue has exceeded 1.2 billion yen.

 

 

 

3rd place went to  THE FIRST SLAM DUNK “, which was released 10 weeks ago. It gathered 193,000 moviegoers during the 3 day weekend and a box office revenue of 288 million yen. The cumulative results are close to a 10 billion yen total, with 6.82 million moviegoers.

 

 

 

4th place was “BTS: Yet To Come in Cinemas” which contained footage from the concert “BTS: Yet To Come in BUSAN” held in Busan on October 2022 by the Korean boy group BTS. 14 cameras that were not used during the live broadcast on the day were shot from various angles, such as super close-up shots and full shots.

 

 

 

“Baian the Assassin, M.D.” debuted in 6th place is the first installment of a two-part film adaptation of Shotaro Ikenami ‘s historical novels. Etsushi Toyokawa plays the role of Baian Fujieda, an acupuncturist who is secretly the mastermind of evil. His co-stars include Ainosuke Kataoka, Miho Kanno, and Yuki Amami.

 

 

 

The 5th place “Suzume no Tojimari” has mobilized 10 million moviegoers in total and exceeded 13.4 billion yen in box office revenue. Along with Your Name (2016) and Weathering with You (2019), It has become director Makoto Shinkai ‘s 3rd consecutive work to reach a total of 10 million moviegoers.

In addition, “Avatar: The Way of Water” , which was on its 8th week of release, has reached a total of 2.22 million moviegoers and exceeded 4 billion yen in box office revenue.
