Yokohama Ryusei Stirs Controversy with Remarks on BL & Diversity

Yokohama Ryusei created controversy earlier today during a fan club livestream. When asked if he would ever star in a BL, he replied, “Please understand that this is just my personal opinion. I’m not interested in BL or anything like that. I don’t get it at all, so it’s not for me. Again, this is just my personal take. I just don’t really understand the concept of diversity. Yeah, that’s about it. I suppose things like BL exist because there’s a demand for them, though. It’s just that I don’t get it.”

These comments created an instant stir online, with people coming out against and in support of his statement. Those who didn’t agree with his comments said that his point of view was outdated and homophobic. They also pointed out that these views are consistent with previous comments he had made in regards to gender, such as:

“When I get married, I want my wife to become a housewife.”

“I want women to do the housework because I will be working.”

“My ideal type is a woman who takes a step or two back and lets the man take the lead.”

“I think that in this day and age, men aren’t manly enough. Isn’t that what’s strange?”

On the flip side, those in support of what he said said that those who are criticizing what he said are trying to limit his freedom of speech, and that the opinions of all individuals should be respected, even if one doesn’t agree with the opinion in question.
