From July 8 – 18, New York’s Japan Society will present the 19th edition of JAPAN CUTS. It is North America’s largest festival of contemporary Japanese film. The over 30 films in this year’s festival cover a wide range, including major award winners, indie darlings, up and coming filmmakers, restorations, documentaries, short films, anime, and more.
A highlight of JAPAN CUTS 2026 will be the presentation of the CUT ABOVE Award for Outstanding Achievement in Film to Suzu Hirose. The festival will host the New York Premiere of her new film “A Pale View of Hills”, for which it will be the festival’s Centerpiece Film.
JAPAN CUTS 2026 will conclude with legendary director Hirokazu Koreeda appearing in-person for the North American Premiere of his new film “Sheep in the Box.” It will serve as the festival’s Closing Film.
