No changes for first place in the box office over the weekend (March 29 to March 31) with “Henna Ie” (A Strange House) remaining on top for the third consecutive week. Still showing strong results the film attracted 389,600 moviegoers and box office revenue of 491 million yen, bringing the cumulative results to 2.07 million moviegoers and over 2.6 billion yen. After months of delay, international summer blockbuster and Academy Award winning film ‘Oppenheimer’ finally made its way into Japanese cinemas over the weekend. The reason for the delay was stated by distribution company Bitter Ends that the subject matter of the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki are of particular sensitivity to Japanese people. As for Oppenheimer’s performance at the box office in Japan, the film debuted in 4th place with 231,000 moviegoers and grossed 300 million yen at the box office. Other newly released films that debuted within the top 10 include Hollywood film “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” in 5th place.
The top 3 remained the same as last week with “Haikyuu!! Battle of The Garbage Dump” in second place with 333,500 moviegoers and box office revenue of 488 million yen. The cumulative results have now exceeded 6.1 million moviegoers and box office revenue of 8.8 billion yen. Still in third place “Doraemon: Nobita’s Earth Symphony” brought in 263,100 moviegoers and grossed 318 million yen bringing the cumulative total to 2.6 million moviegoers and a box office revenue of over 3.1 billion yen.
