An Unforgettable Evening: My Experience Seeing Akina Nakamori as an Overseas Fan

My journey as a devoted fan of Akina Nakamori began in the summer of 2019, when I first stumbled upon her music and was instantly captivated by her voice and unparalleled artistry. At the time, her future on stage felt entirely uncertain as she was semi-retired and remained largely out of the spotlight with no clear signs of a comeback on the horizon. Still I cherished her recorded catalog, holding onto the distant dream of one day hearing that legendary voice again. But I dared not dream that I would ever be able to hear it in person, that was too much dreaming even for me! Fast forward to 2026 when she finally announced her long awaited comeback tour along with the welcoming opportunity for international fans to join her fan club and enter the ticket lottery. I knew I had to take the leap. To my absolute disbelief and joy, luck was on our side and a close friend and I secured tickets for her July 8 concert in Osaka.

Arriving at Festival Hall in Osaka, our very first priority was to head straight for the merchandise line. After scanning the gathering crowd in the lobby, I was immediately struck by the diversity of the audience. Side by side with older attendees who were most likely lifelong fans who had clearly followed her across decades, was a surprisingly large turnout of younger fans. After successfully picking up our merch (I bought a light stick!), the staff instructed everyone to form orderly lines to enter. Sensing our brief moment of hesitation as we tried to navigate the queue, two lovely middle-aged women nearby reached out and warmly tried speaking to us in English. Their kindness and welcoming spirit instantly added a sweet personal touch to the experience and I still think of them until now and wonder if they were curious about how two foreigners discovered Akina.

View from the tenth row at Festival Hall, Osaka

Once inside the main auditorium, my first impressions of the Festival Hall were that it felt neither overwhelming nor undersized. As a venue it was really a perfect balance of grandeur and intimacy. From our seats in the tenth row, Akina would be remarkably close. Right on schedule at 7:00 PM the house lights dimmed, and Akina exploded onto the stage with an electrifying performance of “TATTOO.” Dressed in sleek leather tights, a sharp blazer, and her signature sky high heels, her presence was breathtaking. You could sense a touch of initial nervousness in her voice (understandable after so many years away from touring and large live audiences) but by the final notes her confidence surged through every note and move as she delivered all of the song’s original choreography. She rolled seamlessly into a run of classic hits, including “Kinku,” “TANGO NOIR,” and my personal favorite, “SOLITUDE.” The setlist delivered even more unexpected delights when she treated us to rare live gems like “Gypsy Queen” and “Non-Fiction Ecstasy.”

Following a quick outfit change, Akina took the mic for her first MC segment of the night. The moment she spoke her endearing personality came front and center. She spoke in her almost childlike tone, revealing her more vulnerable side that instantly endeared her to every single person in the room. Despite being in her 60s, she still projects a delicate aura that makes you want to cheer with everything you have and reassure her that she is doing amazingly well. That affectionate tension dissolved right back into pure star power as she launched into her second act, blazing through even more classics like “1/2 no Shinwa,” “I MISSED “THE SHOCK”,” and “Slow Motion.” Her vocals were exceptionally strong and she delivered every dramatic rise without missing a beat. Seeing her execute the original choreography for each of these songs with such precision made the entire set feel like a dream.

The ballad section proved to be one of the most emotional chapters of the entire concert. On stage she was surrounded by warm and gentle stage lighting. Her expressive vocals while she sang on a couch created a moment of heartfelt connection that made the Festival Hall feel like her private living room. I was absolutely thrilled when the intro to “Eki” began. Hearing her perform this masterpiece live felt like such a rare gift especially considering it had been over two decades since she last sang it on stage. During her latest single “Gomen to, Suki to,”  was when tears actually came out from Akina’s eyes and she was visibly shaken up. During these moments her voice was breaking and I could tell fans were concerned but she soldiered on and was able to finish the song.

The final act and encores were nothing short of electric, with every single song and performance somehow managing to surpass the last. Looking across the hall, fans were on their feet and joyfully dancing and following along with the iconic choreography to “Aibu” and “Jukkai” The energy reached a fever pitch during “Kazari Janai no yo Namida wa,” as the entire audience sang along at the top of their lungs right alongside Akina. While her vocals had been flawless all night, it was during this climactic stretch that her power and control reached an absolute peak. She was simply incredible. For the encore, she reappeared in a relaxed concert tour shirt and jeans, finishing off the night with an explosive performance of “DESIRE -Jōnetsu-” that had the entire crowd electrified. As purple confetti strings rained down and the hall erupted in cheers, the atmosphere reached its ultimate high. I was left breathless and craving even more, but as the lights finally came up, one overwhelming truth remained: after all these years, the wait was worth every single second.

In conclusion, the concert was absolutely everything a fan could have ever hoped for, especially for someone who traveled so far just to see her live on stage. She delivered an unbelievable set of her greatest hits, sounded incredible, and poured every ounce of her energy into the performance. She still completely has it! You could tell how deeply nervous she was at times since her hands and voice occasionally trembled during her MC segments or while pouring her heart into the ballads. Yet true to form, she persevered and carried through each song with grace and sheer willpower. That is precisely the kind of consummate professional Akina Nakamori is, and why her connection with her audience remains unshakeable. Naturally, strict Japanese concert etiquette meant photos and videos were strictly prohibited throughout the night but the person sitting right next to me couldn’t resist sneaking a quick video on her phone and honestly, who could blame her?

Here are some of the photos of things I brought back to the hotel with me. As an international fan, seeing Akina Nakamori live is such a rare thing to experience and I couldn’t help but want to share my thoughts and observations with everyone.
