78th Cannes Film Festival Recap

The 78th Cannes Film Festival was held in Cannes, France from May 13 through May 24. A number of Japanese films were show at this year’s festival.

On May 15, “Toi Yamanami no Hikari” (translated titled: “A Pale View of Hills”) made its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival. Several of the cast members, including Suzu Hirose, Yoshida Yo, Matsushita Kohei, and Camilla Aiko attended the premiere. At its end, the film received a five minute standing ovation.

On May 17, “Renoir”, the only Japanese film in competition for this year’s top prize, the Palme d’Or, made its world premiere. Several of the cast members, including Suzuki Yui, Lily Franky, and Ishida Hikari, attended the premiere, along with director Hayakawa Chie. The film received a six minute standing ovation when it ended.

On the 18th, “Kokuho” made its world premiere as part of the Directors’ Fortnight. Several of the cast members, including Yoshizawa Ryo, Yokohama Ryusei, and Watanabe Ken, attended the premiere, along with director Lee Sang Il. “Kokuho” also recieved a six minute standing ovation at its end.

On the same day, “8 Ban Deguchi” (translated title: “Exit 8”) made its world premiere as part of the festival’s Midnight Screenings section. The screening was attended by the film’s stars Ninomiya Kazunari and Komatsu Nana, as well as director Kawamura Genki and screenwriter Hirase Kentaro. When the film ended, there was an eight minute standing ovation.

Also on the 18th, “Miwarashi Sedai” has its world premiere as part of Directors’ Fortnight. The film’s stars, Kurosaki Kodai and Kiryu Mai, were in attendance along with director Danzuki Yuiga. The film received a seven minute standing ovation.

On May 21, “Renai Saiban” has its world premiere, with star Saito Kyoko and director Fukada Koji in attendance. The film received a standing ovation when it finished.

The student film “Ginger Boy” won third place in the La Cinef category. This category consists of 16 films selected from 2,679 entries from 646 film schools around the world. The third place prize consists of a grant of €7,500. The film’s cast and creators were in Cannes to accept the prize.
