Japan Weekend Box Office 1/27-1/29 The Legend & Butterfly Starring Kimura Takuya and Ayase Haruka Dethrones THE FIRST SLAM DUNK

 

The weekend movie box office ranking from January 27th to 29th has been revealed, and the movie “The Legend & Butterfly” starring Kimura Takuya and Ayase Haruka debuted in 1st place. In addition, the newly released animated film “Kin no Kuni Mizu no Kuni” based on Nao Iwamoto’s manga debuted at 6th place. Bollywood movie “RRR”, re-emerged in 9th place after disappearing on the Top 10 charts for 15 weeks.

 

 

The new number one movie, “The Legend & Butterfly” is a film that depicts the story of Nobunaga Oda (played by Kimura Takuya) and his wife Nohime (played by Ayase Haruka) on a grand scale with a total production cost of 2 billion yen. The film was produced as a Toei 70th anniversary film and was directed by Otomo Keishi who directed the Rurouni Kenshin films. Over the three day weekend it attracted 371,000 spectators and raised 497 million yen at the box office.

 

 

 

“THE FIRST SLAM DUNK” , which had held the number one spot for eight weeks in a row, fell one spot to second place over the weekend, drawing 230,000 people and earning 345 million yen at the box office. Cumulative results exceeded 6,475,000 tickets sold and a box office revenue of 9,454 million yen.

 

 

 

“One Piece Film: Red”, which ended its final run on January 29th, had 218,000 spectators and a box office revenue of 292 million yen. In the 177 days since its release, the film has attracted over 14.27 million viewers and earned 19.7 billion yen at the box office, making it the 8th highest-grossing film of all time in Japan. The worldwide box office revenue has reached 31.9 billion yen.

 

 

 

4th place is animated film “Suzume no Tojimari” directed by Shinkai Makoto. Currently in its 12th week of release, the film has attracted over 200,000 people and grossed 274 million yen at the box office over the weekend bringing the cumulative total to 9.9 million spectators and 13.16 billion yen.

 

 

 

Romantic fantasy animated film “Kin no Kuni Mizu no Kuni” produced by Madhouse debuted at 6th place. The story is about two constantly bickering nations, which eventually leads to a war. Princess of the gold nation Sara (voiced by Hamabe Minami), and the prince of the water nation Naranbayar (voiced by Kaku Kento), pretend to get married to each other in order to protect the peace between the two hostile countries.
