Japan Weekend Box Office 02/17 – 02/19

 

 

The weekend movie box office ranking from February 17th to 19th has been released and new Marvel Studios film “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” took the top spot with 248,000 moviegoers in Japan and a box office revenue of 411 million yen in its debut weekend. Newly released films that ranked in the Top 10 include “Shylock’s Children” and “BLUE GIANT”

 

2nd place was “Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village” with 246,000 moviegoers in attendance over the 3 day weekend, and box office revenue of 340 million yen. In total, the number of moviegoers has exceeded 1,874,000 and a box office revenue of 2,637 million yen.

 

Newly released film “Shylock’s Children” that was based on Jun Ikeido’s novel debuted in 3rd place. The plot follows a cash loss incident that occurred at a bank branch. The director is Katsuhide Motoki, who has adapted another one of Jun Ikeido’s novels into a movie such as Recall (2018). The cast of Shylock’s Children includes Abe Sadawo, Ueto Aya, and Tamamori Yuta. Over the weekend it was able to attract 72,000 moviegoers and a box office revenue of 226 million yen.

 

Animated film “BLUE GIANT” based on Shinichi Ishizuka’s manga debuted in 8th place. The story follows a young man who started playing the tenor saxophone after being fascinated by jazz music. He then formed his own band in hopes of making an impact in the Japanese jazz scene. Voice actors include Yuki Yamada, Shotaro Mamiya, and Amane Okayama. BLUE GIANT was directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa, who is also set to release “Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine” this year. Pianist Hiromi Uehara was in charge of the music.
