Over the past few years, a huge influx of K-pop-influenced Japanese groups has occurred. One could easily point to IZ*ONE, TWICE, or JO1 as obvious precursors to this trend.
One such group is the newly formed cosmosy, consisting of members a’mei, kamión, himesha and de_hana. The 4 member group debuted in Japan last December and globally earlier this year with the digital single zigy=zigy followed by an official debut with the single Lucky=One, under the creative director SINXITY, formerly of YG Entertainment.
Read our interview with them below!
Hello! Please introduce yourselves as a group to our readers.
a’mei: cosmosy is a Japanese girl group. Our first song came out on December 31, 2024. Our official debut was on April 11, with Lucky=One. Our concept is youth and the universe. It means we have endless possibilities!
himesha: We’re cosmosy, a 4-member girl group from Japan. We sing in English, Japanese, and Korean. Our concept concerns the universe, youth, growing up, and overcoming challenges.
What is it like being a mixture of Japanese and Korean influences to produce a new kind of K-pop group?
a’mei: We’re all Japanese, but we trained in Korea. So our style is a mix of Japanese and Korean vibes. K-pop is strong. Japan is sweet. We mix both! That’s what makes cosmosy!
himesha: It feels like Japan and Korea became one team! We’re all Japanese, but we trained in Korea. So our style is a mix of Japanese and Korean vibes! — Japanese passion and Korean power. It’s a new flavor of K-pop, and we love it!
kamión: It feels special! We’re all Japanese, but we trained and debuted in Korea. So, we learned a lot from both cultures. Japanese style is softer and detailed, and Korean training is strong. Mixing both cultures makes cosmosy fresh and unique (like) a new kind of K-pop!
Each of you has a unique identity and personality. Would you mind also doing an individual introduction as well?
a’mei: Hi, I’m a’mei, the youngest cosmosy member. I’ve been dancing since I was little. I love it! I can dance in many styles, but hip-hop is my specialty.
I’ve done dance battles and taught kids how to dance. I rap, too! People say my charm is my big smile and bright energy!
de_hana: People say I look like a white mochi bunny — cute and pure! But I have a low voice, so it’s a bit unexpected. The members say I’m funny, too. Sometimes I act a little random (do silly things), and they laugh!
himesha : I started dancing when I was 3. I’ve always loved music and dancing. Last February, I got cast — and I knew I wanted to make music. Now I’m living my dream of being an artist!
kamión: Hi, I’m kamión from Osaka! I speak Korean the most in our group. I talk a lot… so I guess I’m the chatty one! I love singing, so I’m always humming at home. I can play the piano, too!
Some of you have done public-facing idol work before your debut. Could each member give some insight into how their past lives have shaped how they approached their debut?
a’mei: I’ve been dancing since I was little, it helps me a lot on stage now!
himesha: I used to dance a lot in Tokyo and joined many dance events. One day, we took a group photo after a show, and someone saw that picture and cast me! Thanks to that, I felt more ready and confident to debut.
de_hana: I did musicals when I was little. Later, I joined PRODUCE 101 JAPAN THE GIRLS and competed with many talented people. Those experiences helped me when I debuted as cosmosy. I don’t get nervous on stage — I want to keep getting better and have fun!
kamión: I joined PRODUCE 101 JAPAN THE GIRLS before. I got a lot of love and support from fans, which gave me so much confidence. I’m sure that experience has helped me when I debuted as cosmosy.
Let’s talk about your music!
Firstly, your song zigy=zigy – how would you characterize this song to your fans?
himesha: “zigy=zigy” is fun and catchy! It has a funky beat and makes you want to dance. We loved making it, and we hope you love it too!
de_hana: The melody is super catchy, and the chorus keeps playing in your head.
kamión: It was a bit hard at first, but fun! Each language feels different, so we practiced a lot. Now we’re happy that we can sing for more fans and reach a wider audience, and that’s so cool!
What was it like singing in Japanese, Korean and English?
de_hana: I was initially surprised, but it was new, so I thought it was challenging. Now, I am used to and enjoy singing in three languages.
a’mei: It was a new challenge I never thought of, I believe this became a first step toward global activities as well as Japan by using three languages.
What was it like recording and releasing the music video for the release?
himesha: I enjoyed the music video shoot with the dancers, because I have been dancing since I was a child. I’ve had dancing experiences in the past, so everything felt new, but it was exciting.
kamión: I shot my first music video as an idol, so everything was new at first. It was a little bit tough. I felt like I had finally become an idol by shooting the music video. So my heart was whole.
What were your thoughts on performing this song?
de_hana: zigy=zigy has a strong melody and choreography, so I was excited when performing it, and “知らない 聞こえない” is my favourite part. That part is the most exciting.
You later released the official debut song Lucky=One. How would you describe this song to your fans? What was it like working on the song?
de_hana: The chorus is super catchy, and the main dance is easy to follow and addictive! We hope lots of people try the dance!
a’mei: It mixes fantasy and reality. We wanted to show something dreamy but realistic at the same time.
kamión: It’s soft but powerful. When you listen, you might feel like you’re in a fantasy.
Lucky=One is entirely written in English. Could you describe your experiences recording and performing this track?
himesha: I practiced English pronunciation with my English teacher. I had the rap part, so I had to practice hard.
de_hana: Because it was all in English, overseas people can understand the meaning of the lyrics, and I believe our global fans will enjoy it as much as we do. I can easily express the song, but not in other languages.
This music video is unique, even compared to other idol releases. What was it like making the music video? How would you describe the video to fans?
kamión: This music video has a mysterious story. We hope fans try to guess the meaning while watching – it’s more fun that way! We also dressed up like elves for the first time. At first, I was a bit nervous, thinking, “Does this suit me?” Everything turned out great, and I’m happy with it!
a’mei: It is a music video with an elaborate story that can only be told by cosmosy.
You made your debut on Music Bank with this release. What was that experience like?
de_hana: I felt like a dream because I could meet our fans and perform on the stage again. We had good moments and reactions than I thought, so I was thrilled.
kamión: I dreamed of performing on Korean music shows since childhood. It felt surreal. I was just so happy to be on stage. Thanks to the love and support from our fans, I could perform bravely.
What sort of concept would you like to do next? Are there any specific ideas that you come back to that you would like to try?
a’mei: I like girl crush styles. I like tough, strong, and cool vibes more than cute ones. If I get the chance in the future, I want to try a girl crush concept!
kamión: I would like to try the pretty and cute princess concept! We all have charming visuals, so this princess vibe would suit us well.
Finally, please send a message to your Western fans!
a’mei: Thank you for your love and support. We’ll keep working hard. Love you all!
kamión: Thank you to everyone for supporting cosmosy. We’ll keep working hard and make you proud!
himesha: We read your messages every day! Keep talking to us — we love all of them and your support!
de_hana: cosmosy is about love, strength, and dreams. We hope our music gives you hope, too.
Many thanks to cosmosy for the interview, and please check out their releases!
